如果你想和孩子一起玩科学、做实验,却苦于不知道从哪里开始,这本书就是你的理想选择——《Stay Curious and Keep Exploring: 50 Amazing, Bold Science Experiments to Do with the Whole Family》。 Flying Tea Bag Ghosts How do hot air balloons work? ABOUT THE EXPERIMENT My little scientists absolutely loved this experiment onEmily’s Wonder Lab. At first, it doesn’t seem like anything is happening, and then BOOM! Your flying tea bag ghosts fly to the ceiling! It’s incredibly easy to do (with adult supervision, of course!) and very fun to watch. This one only takes a few minutes to prepare, and the cleanup is quick and easy. The reason it works is similar to the reason a hot air balloon floats. When you heat air up, it becomes lessdense(the molecules want to spread out more). Because the hot air is less dense, it rises among the cooler air around it. That’s why you see hot air balloon pilots lighting the air inside the balloon with fire—they need to keep the air inside the balloon at a relatively low density, so they can rise into the sky. THE SCIENCE Why did it rise to the ceiling? It rises to the ceiling because your tea bag is like a hot air balloon. When the tea bag was lit on fire, it started heating the air inside the tea bag and all around it. That hot air is rising in a room—even if you can’t see it. The tea bag rises along with it because the tea bag itself is made up of such light material that it becomes easily carried by the hot air. What’s that stuff falling back down? You’ll notice that part of the tea bag will fall back down from the ceiling. If you catch it in your hands you can feel how light it is. It will also stain your hands black! That’s because what you’re holding is ash—carbon from the tea bag that was left over after the burning happened. INSTRUCTIONS Using scissors, cut off the very top of the tea bag (where the string is connected). Empty the contents of the tea bag and discard. Squeeze the sides of the bag and turn your tea bag into a cylinder. Use markers to draw a spooky ghost on your tea bag. Set your tea bag on a flat surface (you may need to use your scissors to even out the bottom of your tea bag if it keeps falling over). Have an adult use a lighter to light the top of the tea bag, and then stand back!
